What is the Montessori Method?
At the turn of the 20th century, the Montessori Method was established as an educational method. This method differed from modern theories as children were not seen as empty slates but rather as a full person with unlimited potential and an unadulterated view of the world with innocence and curiosity. The method provides structure through the prepared environment, careful observation, and utilization of sensitive periods of development.
What is Cosmic Curriculum?
Dr. Montessori observed the psychological and spiritual needs of the aging child and created the Cosmic Curriculum. This curriculum deepens with the child as they question the origins behind profound subjects and points out the interconnectedness of all cultures. This takes place through the 5 Great Stories which focus on the order and balance required for our Universe to survive, the coming of life and humans, and the transition to writing and numbers. By integrating subjects from many areas into one, students naturally begin to see connections and patterns in our world.
What about grades?
River & Cape Montessori School’s rubric-based grading system enables each student to self-assess, promotes fairness, and emphasizes growth and progress.
Records of work are kept weekly and in depth reports are done quarterly.
Academic Overview
Cosmic curriculum integrates a variety of subject areas to emphasize their interconnectedness and naturally encourages spiral learning.
Weekly work plans are collaborative between students and their teacher. These plans allow students to develop essential skills such as time management, executive function, and organization, in addition to the skills they acquire through the lessons themselves.
Work plans are checked at the end of each week to reflect on what was learned, what requires practice, and what challenges may be appropriate the following week.
